Pond De-Icer a Good Thing Sort of "See Update" January 13, 2007 Johnathan R. Peal (Aurora, CO USA) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have 100 gallon plastic in ground pond which is only 18" deep and is approximately 4'W x 7'L. Currently it's -6 below and none of the Pond has iced over. I see our fish directly under the heater when it's cold. I keep the water circulating 24/7 in the pond with a pond pump which also has a fountain head in the middle of the pond. Recently we had over 36" of snow and the pond was burried in a drift. There was a 9" or so portion of the pond that was kept open. Most of the pond was slush in the water but my fish came through it all with no problem. I think it was due to the combination of the circulating water and the heater as well. I would recommend this pond heater to anyone who has a plastic preformed pond. None of the pond has froze even in sub zero temps which I find amazing and I'm sure this Pond Heater has helped keep it Ice Free.
Update: 2/15/2009
Since this time I have had three of these things and I won't purchase another since they only last one season. In fact the last one I bought didn't last that long. When it works it works great but just not long enough for me to justify the purchase. I'm keeping my pond ICE free with the fountain with the head removed, and a waterfall just to keep the water circulating. I wish I could change the stars I gave originally but it won't let me.
Great Stuff March 8, 2007 H. Pak (Fairfax, VA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The weather in my area got really cold since I got the deicer but I didn't have to go out to the pond to break the ice because the deicer was working great. I only had it for a month or so but I am more than happy with the product so far. My fish are doing just fine.
Pond Heater December 28, 2007 William J. Davis Jr. (Southeast Michigan) A good product. First one lasted over five years in all winter Northern location. Not too bad.
Pond Heater February 9, 2008 flying high (Dayton, Ohio) I have been very happy with the pond de-icer. It has worked very well especially when the temperature dropped to near zero.
Best pond de-icer ever January 10, 2009 J. Whitney (Indianapolis, IN) I use one of these for my small 150 gallon pond, and it never freezes even at 0 degrees F. I use 2 of them in my 4000 gallon pond and they do a great job. At 0 degrees, they still keep a small opening to release gases. Both my ponds are liner ponds. I have used other de-icers and have burned them out. This one is definitely worth the money.
